Africa Camaign Steering Committee - Working group: Accessibility
Background:
With increasing awareness that persons with disabilities also feel the impact of HIV & AIDS, governments and HIV/AIDS organisations are beginning to seek ways to make their care and support services accessible to different disability groups. Excellent guidelines on how to make HIV and AIDS services accessible are beginning to emerge (e.g. Groce, SHIA), and providers are beginning to take action. It remains unclear, however, when a service can be ‘advertised' as accessible.
Objective of the ICASA working group:
Minimum criteria for accessible information and services for specific disability groups.
Expected Outcomes:
1. 3-5 minimum criteria for providing each of the following: accessible prevention, testing, HIV care, ARV, counseling, home based care and palliative care to persons have intellectual disability.
2. 3-5 minimum criteria for providing each of the following: accessible prevention, testing, HIV care, ARV, counseling, home based care and palliative care to persons who are blind or have low vision.
3. 3-5 minimum criteria for providing each of the following: accessible prevention, testing, HIV care, ARV, counseling, home based care and palliative care to persons who are deaf or hearing-impaired.
4. 3-5 minimum criteria for providing each of the following: accessible prevention, testing, HIV care, ARV, counseling, home based care and palliative care to persons who are physically disabled.
Activities
- Review of existing accessibility criteria for specific disability groups
- Agreement on 3-5 minimum criteria per disability group and per service provided (e.g. testing or ARV adherence counseling)
- Widespread dissemination of the minimum criteria
- Promote ‘advertisement' of accessible information and services
